Choosing the Right Guitar for A Beginner

Like all instruments, guitars can get expensive, but we hate to tell you to compromise on sound when you are learning guitar. A twangy cheap guitar can sound bad regardless of how well you play it, and we want you to find your practice time rewarding!

Our Guitar Recommendation

Our guitar recommendation for children and adults is this small parlor guitar. Parlor guitars are quieter than the average guitar, but although they don't project as much sound, they can sound beautiful for far less than the average guitar. Bonus points: due to their smaller size, children eight and up can play them as well as adults which make them fun for the whole family to play!

To put the price of this parlor guitar in perspective, Elisha, your Voetberg Music Academy Guitar Instructor said it's hard to find a quality guitar without paying thousands, but he highly recommends this parlor guitar and loves its tone . . . all for under $200!

Guitar Sizing

If you have your eye on a more traditional guitar and are curious about sizing, on average we recommend a three-quarter size guitar when students start Voetberg Music Academy (between ages seven and 10) and a full size guitar starting at age 11.

Full-Sized Beginner Guitar

We recommend going to a local music shop where you can feel, play, and listen to guitars. You can ask your question to a sales person in real-time and ensure you are picking out an instrument that gets you excited to play. However, if you are a mom of many children, or are just not into spending your afternoon driving around looking for instruments, we recommend the Gibson Hummingbird Guitar.

The Hummingbird has a smaller neck than most full sized guitars which makes it easy for beginners to play.

What Else Do You Need To Get Started?

Since we teach acoustically here at Voetberg Music Academy, you won't need an amp, instrument cable or headphones to get started. You will want to get a tuner (or you can tune to an app on your phone), and a few picks. A guitar strap can be helpful if you plan to stand while you play, and you will want a case to travel and a set of extra strings. Don't keep your Guitar in its case often though! Hang it on the wall with this wall mount so it's easy to grab and play throughout the day, or offer to guests!
